  1. Sleep          is              one            of   
  2.         those           funny          things
  3. about          being           a              human
  4.         being           -              you  
  5. have           to              do             it.  
  6.         Have            you            ever 
  7. wondered       why?            And            what 
  8.         about           the            crazy
  9. dreams         everyone        has?           Like 
  10.         the             one            where
  11. a              bad             person         is   
  12.         chasing         you            and  
  13. you            can't           run            or   
  14.         yell.           Does           that 
  15. make           sense?          We             all  
  16.         know            how            sleep
  17. looks.         When            we             see  
  18.         someone         sleeping       we   
  19. recognize      the             following      characteristics:
  20.         If              possible,      the  
  21. person         will            lie            down 
  22.         to              go             to   
  23. sleep.         The             person's       eyes 
  24.         are             closed.        The  
  25. person         doesn't         hear           anything
  26.         unless          it             is   
  27. a              loud            noise.         The  
  28.         person          breathes       in   
  29. a              slow,           rhythmic       pattern.
  30.         The             person's       muscles
  31. are            completely      relaxed.       If   
  32.         sitting         up,            the  
  33. person         may             fall           out  
  34.         of              his            or   
  35. her            chair           as             sleep
  36.         deepens.        Occasionally   during
  37. sleep          the             person         rolls
  38.         over            or             reconfigures
  39. his            or              her            body.
  40.         This            happens        approximately
  41. once           or              twice          an   
  42.         hour.           This           may  
  43. be             the             body's         way  
  44.         of              making         sure 
  45. that           no              part           of   
  46.         the             body           or   
  47. skin           has             its            circulation
  48.         cut             off            for  
  49. too            long            a              period
  50.         of              time.          In   
  51. addition       to              these          outward
  52.         signs,          the            heart
  53. slows          down            and            the  
  54.         brain           does           some 
  55. pretty         funky           things.        In   
  56.         other           words,         a    
  57. sleeping       person          is             unconscious
  58.         to              most           things
  59. happening      in              the            environment.
  60.         The             biggest        difference
  61. between        someone         who            is   
  62.         asleep          and            someone
  63. who            has             fainted        or   
  64.         gone            into           a    
  65. coma           is              the            fact 
  66.         that            a              sleeping
  67. person         can             be             aroused
  68.         if              the            stimulus
  69. is             strong          enough.        If   
  70.         you             shake          the  
  71. person,        yell            loudly         or   
  72.         flash           a              bright
  73. light,         a               sleeping       person
  74.         will            wake           up.  
  75. For            any             animal         living
  76.         in              the            wild,
  77. it             just            doesn't        seem 
  78.         very            smart          to   
  79. design         a               mandatory      8-hour
  80.         period          of             near-total
